Lenovo Infrastructure Deployment and VMware Cluster Migration for a Eye care Hospital

Overview:

Dynamic Professional Services was engaged by a leading Eye Care Hospital in Chennai to deploy a Lenovo ThinkSystem with VMware Cluster, migrate 40 VMs totaling 25TB, and implement Lenovo xClarity Administrator (LXCA) for enhanced system monitoring. The goal was to improve the company's IT infrastructure by migrating from an aging hardware platform to a more scalable and resilient virtualized environment, providing better business continuity and system reliability. The scope also included hardware installation, VMware cluster deployment, V2V migration, storage configuration, and final documentation with knowledge transfer. The services were provided remotely, except for the one-time onsite hardware installation.

challenges
Challenges:
  • Aging IT Infrastructure: The client's existing hardware was outdated, leading to performance bottlenecks, maintenance challenges, and an increasing risk of hardware failure.
  • Migration Complexity: Migrating 40 virtual machines with 25TB of data without causing business disruptions required meticulous planning and execution.
  • Ensuring System Redundancy: Building a reliable high-availability system and configuring both network and storage redundancy were critical to ensuring minimal downtime.
  • Remote Implementation: The entire project, except for hardware installation, needed to be executed remotely, requiring close coordination with the client’s onsite IT team for "hands and eyes" support.
Solution:
  • Pre-Implementation Kick-off: Conducted a kickoff meeting with the customer, reviewed the project scope, and assessed site readiness.
  • Hardware Installation (Onsite):Verified the Bill of Materials (BOM), rack and stack Lenovo ThinkSystem servers, updated firmware, and configured management IPs.
  • DE Storage Deployment (Remote):
    • Configured the storage OS and network, connected the storage to the server, created storage pools and volumes, and mapped them to the hosts.
    • Configured call-home notifications and validated the system.
hybrid
  • Lenovo ThinkSystem with VMware Cluster Deployment (Remote):
    • EInstalled ESXi on Lenovo servers, configured UEFI settings, and deployed VMware vCenter.
    • Set up distributed virtual switches, configured storage datastores, and created a sample VM for basic validation.
    • Tested high-availability (HA) and Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) functionality.
  • V2V Migration (Remote):
    • Conducted a migration workshop and inventory planning.
    • Migrated 40 VMs from the existing infrastructure using VMware vSphere vMotion, testing each VM for network and application functionality post-migration.
  • Deployment of Lenovo xClarity Administrator (Remote):Configured Lenovo xClarity Administrator (LXCA) for system monitoring, auto-support, and firmware updates.
  • Final Documentation, Knowledge Transfer, and Handover (Remote): Delivered detailed "as-is" configuration documentation and provided two hours of knowledge transfer (KT) to the client’s IT team.
Benefits:
  • Enhanced Performance and Scalability:The new VMware cluster allowed for significantly improved performance and resource management, supporting the SME’s growing infrastructure needs.
  • Improved System Availability: With HA and DRS configurations in place, the client could maintain uninterrupted service, even during server or network outages.
  • BCost Efficiency: Remote deployment reduced overall project costs while still delivering high-quality service and expertise.
  • Simplified IT Management: Lenovo xClarity Administrator provided a unified platform for managing and monitoring the IT infrastructure, reducing operational complexity.
  • Seamless Migration: Dynamic ensured a smooth and minimally disruptive migration, with comprehensive planning and testing, allowing the client to continue operations without downtime.
Conclusion:

Dynamic successfully deployed a resilient, scalable Lenovo ThinkSystem with VMware cluster for the SME’s manufacturing business. The project not only modernized the client’s IT infrastructure but also ensured higher availability, enhanced system performance, and simplified management. The V2V migration was executed flawlessly, with minimal disruption to the business. This solution positioned the client for future growth and greater operational efficiency.
